In recent weeks, investors have shown significant enthusiasm for SK Eternix, a subsidiary of South Korea’s SK Group specializing in renewable energy. The company’s shares have experienced a remarkable rise of over 114% within a month, closing at 80,900 won (approximately US$55.35) on Friday. This surge stands in sharp contrast to the broader market trends, as the Kospi index fell by 20.9% and shares of SK hynix, SK Group’s primary semiconductor unit, saw a decline of 31.2% during the same period.
The momentum for SK Eternix accelerated notably in the past week, with its stock price climbing by an impressive 44.9% over five trading days. Institutional investors have been particularly active, purchasing a net 106.8 billion won in shares, with foreign investors contributing by buying a net 79 billion won. Analysts attribute this robust performance to growing optimism that the expansion of AI infrastructure, which demands substantial electricity resources, will bolster the long-term need for renewable energy solutions.
Adding to investor confidence is the South Korean government’s commitment to expanding its clean energy capabilities. In June, the government projected that key industrial initiatives, such as AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing clusters, would require an additional 39.7 gigawatts of electricity. Furthermore, the government reaffirmed its ambitious target to increase the nation’s renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by the year 2030.
SK Eternix’s strategic moves also play a critical role in its stock market success. The company’s planned 2 trillion won joint venture with global private equity firm KKR is anticipated to accelerate its growth trajectory within the clean energy sector. This partnership is expected to enhance SK Eternix’s capabilities and solidify its position in the rapidly evolving renewable energy market.
Overall, the convergence of increased demand for renewable energy driven by AI infrastructure needs, supportive government policies, and strategic business ventures has positioned SK Eternix as a standout performer in the stock market, reflecting a broader investor shift towards sustainable energy investments.
