In a recent directive, U.S. aviation authorities have mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max airplanes to check for potential cracks in a critical part of the fuselage. The focus is on the bear strap, a structural component that supports the fuselage around the aircraft’s exit doors. This inspection order will apply to approximately 471 aircraft, with procedures set to commence in September.
This decision follows the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which spurred earlier inspections of that series. Although there have been no reports of cracks in the 737 Max models to date, the regulatory body highlighted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with its predecessors, raising the possibility of the same issue arising.
The regulator has cautioned that if these cracks go unnoticed, they could compromise a vital structural element and potentially undermine the overall integrity of the aircraft. Boeing has acknowledged this concern, noting that it has been collaborating with airlines on this issue since it was first identified in 2019. The company emphasized that these mandatory checks aim to detect and address any problems before they escalate.
These inspections add another layer of scrutiny to the 737 Max, which has faced significant challenges in recent years. The model was globally grounded after two tragic crashes occurred in 2018 and 2019, leading to heightened awareness and concern over its safety, manufacturing, and engineering standards.
